SoCal Teen Circumnavigator Finishes First Leg of Cruise

Steady currents carried 16-year-old Southern California sailor Abby Sunderland across the equator, signifying the completion of the teen’s first leg of her cruise around the world. Sunderland is pursuing her dream to become the youngest person to solo circumnavigate the world nonstop.

Leg One, Check – 16-year-old Abby Sunderland has crossed the equator, marking a successful first step in her nonstop solo circumnavigation attempt.
After an unplanned stop in Cabo San Lucas in January for maintenance issues, the teen successfully crossed from the Northern to Southern Hemisphere Feb. 21, without the help of the wind.
“About a mile over the equator, the wind died completely and all I had was a current pushing me backward,” Sunderland wrote on her online blog.
The winds have picked up for the second oldest teen in the Sunderland family. First-born Zac Sunderland completed his solo circumnavigation last year. He held the title of the youngest person to solo circumnavigate the world before England’s Mike Perham grabbed the title, finishing a few weeks later.
Abby Sunderland began her trip Jan. 23 from Marina del Rey on her Category 0 Open 40 sailboat, Wild Eyes. After equipment malfunctions, she relaunched Feb. 7, after a short stay in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Her cruise route includes sailing south of Cape Horn, through the South Atlantic on an eastern course, past the Cape of Good Hope, through the Indian Ocean and into the Pacific. Sunderland intends to be home by spring 2010.
